DIY Garden Boxes

Garden boxes and planters are a great way to update your garden while still getting gorgeous plants and delicious fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Plus, there are many benefits to having garden boxes over an in-ground garden, including improved drainage, looser soil (which allows roots to grow), plant containment, and decreased risk of animals and weeds. In short, garden planters make it much easier to take care of your plants. And what’s more, making your own garden boxes is extremely easy!

What materials do I need to build my planter?

Some materials and sizes will vary depending on the planter you choose to build and the size of your garden. Generally speaking, you’ll need:

  • Wood Planks and Posts, measured (we recommend using cedar wood as it is rot resistant and gives your garden boxes a beautiful, natural finish!)

  • Stainless Steel Screws

  • Aggregate

  • Weed Fabric

This should be enough to build a basic DIY Garden Box.

What tools do I need to build a garden boxer?

Though you will need a few tools in your toolkit to build this garden box, the good news is you don’t need to be an advanced woodworker to make this. You’ll need:

  • Level

  • Drill Bit

  • Screw Gun

  • Drill

  • Saws

  • Wood Clamps

  • Staple gun

You’ll also need a wheelbarrow, shovel, and post-hole digger to settle your garden box into your yard.

What kind of garden box should I build?

There are plenty of DIY garden box designs on the internet, so if you’re looking for something unique, no problem! Here are some of our favorite DIY garden box planter instructions and ideas:

  • Standard Raised Planter Box: a simple, rustic design with a built-in lower shelf for storage and decor. An excellent option for any garden and any style!

  • Rolling Planter Box: the same as a standard planter box, but with wheels on the legs. This makes it extremely easy to move for watering, finding sunlight, or transporting inside during inclement weather.

  • Raised Planter Box with Compost Bins: a raised planter box perfect for any vegetable garden, with built-in composting bins to help feed the plants with much-needed nutrients. There’s also a post to keep some hanging plants.

  • Window Planter Box: short on yard space? A windowsill planter box may be the answer for you. These are great for planting flowers to liven up your home or herbs to freshen your meals.
