Add Lasting Summer Color with Perennials

Spring is finally here, so it's time to return to the garden and add some life to your home! There's no better way to liven up your outdoor space than adding beautiful, boldly colored florals into your garden. When choosing plants, there are two routes you can take: perennials or annuals.

Perennials will come back every year, with some spreading more each season and some staying exactly where you planted them. They can come in various shapes, sizes, and colors, and you can pick which perennials are most suitable for your land depending on soil type, amount of light, etc. Annuals last for one season but will last longer throughout the season than perennials. They are also known for having bolder colors. Because of this, annuals are fantastic for experimenting with color each season! You can also use annuals to fill empty spots where perennials will bloom later in the summer. Both are worthy choices, but perennials will stay with you throughout the years, giving your home a classic and warm look.

Consider choosing these plants for your garden to help you add lasting summer color with perennials:

  • Daylilies. Light up your garden with some beautiful daylilies! With their trumpet shape and classic bright yellow color, this flower will brighten any yard like the summer sun. You can also get daylilies in colors like pink, red, or purple. Daylilies require a good bit of sunlight but do not do well in the dry summer heat, so consider that when mapping out your garden.
  • Geraniums. If you're looking for the perfect flower to help you add lasting summer color, consider adding geraniums. Hardy geraniums come in various colors, so you can get geraniums for any style or design. They also attract butterflies and resist rabbits, so you don't need to worry if you're attracting some wildlife to your garden!
  • Hibiscus. Hibiscus flowers are known for their bright pink, red, and white blooms, which scream spring and summer. One of the reasons they do so well in the summer is that they love being in the full sun. They also attract some beautiful local wildlife, including hummingbirds and butterflies! This great, delicate-looking flower can add a touch of elegance to any garden it's in.
  • Bee Balm. Bee balms are truly showstopping flowers with bold colors, beautiful blooms, tall height, and beautiful fragrances. The smell can also attract wildlife to your yard! Expect to find bee balms in reds, pinks, and purples, ranging from 1-4 feet tall. They grow in both the sun and shade, so plan accordingly!
  • Lavender. Looking to add a touch of the French countryside to your garden? Lavender is the answer! Its classic purple pigment will add a subtle pop of color to your yard without going overboard. Plant it in full sun with well-drained soil, and you have a beautiful perennial attracting plenty of wildlife (and none of the rabbits!).
