Plants, Trees, and Shrubs for Seasonal Interest

Before you purchase plants for your garden, it's crucial to map out where you'll place them based on the needs of each plant. Even more so, it's vital to consider each plant's life span and when it is in its prime when it blooms. The last thing you want is a garden full of plants that all bloom in the spring, leaving you with a lifeless and barren exterior for the rest of the year! To avoid this, plant a variety of multi-seasonal plants to keep your home looking fresh and vibrant all year long.

Here are some of our favorite plants, trees, and shrubs that you can add to your yard for seasonal interest:

  • Oak Trees. The classic oak tree is an excellent addition to any yard, regardless of design or style. During the summer, oak trees can add a tremendous amount of shade, adding some coolness when outside in the warm weather. Acorns will begin to mature in the late summer and fall during autumn, just as the leaves start to change color featuring those gorgeous oranges and reds we love so much.
  • Maple Trees. Like oak trees, maple trees are another great tree that can last through the season, with bright green leaves in the spring and summer and colorful red and yellow leaves during the autumn.
  • Dogwood Bushes. Dogwoods are gorgeous year-round because of the beautiful pops of color they add. During their peak bloom in early spring and summer, dogwoods have yellow-green leaves and golden-orange leaves in autumn. In the winter, they show off beautifully colored stems of yellow, red, and orange, making great additions to any bouquet or flower arrangement and adding a bold pop of color against winter snow!
  • Crabapple Trees. Looking for a tree with flowers? Look no further than the crabapple tree. With beautiful and bold pink and red flowers, crabapple trees are truly showstopping in the springtime. They have lush, green foliage in the summer and yellow leaves with the signature red fruit in the autumn. Additionally, these trees can attract some fantastic wildlife in the winter.
  • Evergreen Bushes. Evergreen shrubs are fantastic because they remain green all year, so you never have to worry about barren bushes in the wintertime. However, depending on the type of evergreen you get, you can also get some pops of color throughout the year. Rhododendrons produce spring-summer flowers, and winter berries and hollies provide great red berries that look wonderful in the winter.
