The Versatility of Container Decorating

As the wintry weather season approaches, consider freshening up your containers and planters with fall annuals like pansies, rudbeckias, flowering kale & and cabbage, or winter decor. Container gardening allows for great versatility and helps you develop a green thumb while keeping your plants in a small space.

Why Opt for Container Gardening?
There are a few reasons why container gardening may work best for you and your home. If you don't have the space around your house to plant a large garden but still want to develop a green thumb and brighten your home with plants, container gardening is an excellent choice. You may also have a busy schedule and might not have the time to commit to a full garden or may not have full mobility to work in one. If you live in an environment with poor climate conditions and poor soil, container gardening may be your only option.

Picking the Right Container
There are advantages and disadvantages to several types of container materials.
  • Clay and terracotta pots are lighter and more delicate, so consider using them during the Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons and avoid using them during harsh winters. These planters would also be an excellent choice for decks and balconies, as they aren't too heavy.
  • Cast concrete containers are long-lasting and can be left outside in all weather conditions. They're heavy and durable, meaning they will stay in place better during harsh weather conditions.
  • Plastic and fiberglass pots are very lightweight, easy to move, and a great choice for many spots around your home. They can be kept outside during good weather conditions and are better suited for warmer months.
  • Wood containers are very natural looking and provide plants protection against temperature changes. They can be inexpensive because you can build them yourself.
  • Metal containers are both strong and sturdy, allowing them to protect your plants during harsh conditions. Consider switching to or using these planters when the weather gets cooler, as they tend to heat up easily.

Choosing Versatile Plants and Décor
During the warm weather seasons, if you're looking to plant vegetables, planting the right veggies in the right conditions is crucial. Vegetables that work best for container planting include kale, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes, beans, and much more. Planting vegetables in the right-sized containers and keeping them watered regularly is vital. Containers should also be able to keep vegetables wet between waterings and not dry them out.

When the holiday season begins, you can continue to utilize your planting containers by adding festive décor and seasonal greens. You can incorporate greenery, twigs, red dogwood branches, birch poles, and other holiday décor, such as garland, into your planters and containers for a more festive aesthetic. Heavy-duty containers that can withstand harsh weather conditions are ideal for creating holiday décor if you're living in a colder climate.
